Nereis is a young man, 1. 74 m in height, quite thin, with blue eyes, very long brown hair which he keeps tied in the back in diferent stiles, a very peacefull face, pale skin and no beard.
He wears a double chain mail armour over a leather coath. He has leather boots and leather pants which are usually covered with a black kilt.
Nereis was born in a large village in the north east, close to the great tundra. He is the youngest son of Algokhalmin, a former strategic officer of the king.
Algokhalmin was a loyal servant of the king for 20 years after which he was allowed to retire. He was given a large sum of money and great honors for his service. And so he went about and found a nice village in which to settle and raise a family, also becoming the greatest blacksmith in the area.
Nereis and his 3 older brothers were raised in a very strange way by their father. While other kids were running after each other with sticks, Nereis and his brothers were chasing each other on horseback with wooden swords, also they were the only children in the village who could read and write. Every evening their father would call them to him and tell them stories of courage and honesty, after which they would play a strange game on a bord with black and white squares and funny litlle pieces carved as horses and men.
Algokhalmin loved all his boys but he loved Nereis most. Maybe because he was the youngest or maybe because he seemed smarter than the others from a smaller age, or maybe because he was looking more like his mother with his thin arms and pale face, anyways his brothers felt this and ofthen picked on him while they were kids, but their father allways intervened and would say: "By hating someone you do more harm to yourself than to him! Respect each other, for you are strong as a mountain united and weak as a leaf divided!"
When Nereis was 11 he saw his oldest brother packing a large bag and sharpening the sword his father made for him two years before when he was 16. Nereis had only seen that sword once when his brother was training with his father in the early morning. When he asked his brother where he was going he didn't answer, he just chased him out of the room with a smile on his face. That night Algokhalmin walked his oldest son to the edge of the forrest with a young black steed and returned alone with a pale face and wet eyes. Nereis asked what had happenend but his father smiled and said: "Wait and you will see!" This happened the following year and two years later with his older brothers and every time the same answer: "Wait and you will see!"
From the age of 14 to 16 Nereis was the only son left in the house. He spent alot of time with his father, learning strategies and reading books. He tried to learn the way of the blacksmith but he wasn't strong enough. The iron would get cold before he could give it the shape of a blade, and as he would reheat it over and over again the iron would lose strenght and crack. Seeing this his father told him to train his speed if he couldn't be strong. In his spare time Algokhalmin would make a training course for his son and would encourage him to run through it faster and faster paying attention to everything around him. One day the father called his son in the house and told him: "Son you are 16 now and well on your way to becoming a great man! You are not as strong as your brothers were at this age but you are fast, smart and kind. I always gave your brothers broadswords at this age, but that would not fit you, so I spent two nights working on this special weapon for you!" And he turned around and openned a long chest from which he pulled out this new blade and placed it in the hands of his son. Nereis was trembling with excitement as he couldn't believe his eyes! The weapon was light, about 1 m and 20 cm long out of which 50 cm was just the wooden hilt. The blade was sharp only on one side and curved upwoards. Between the blade and the hilt there was a round guard beutifully ornamented like a coiled snake.
"It is yours my son, and now I tell you what I have told your brothers before you: train, be very skilled with weapons of all kind but most of all with this one, may this weapon be like a part of you for it will never lie or betray you! Trust it and wield it well and always be on your guard, for it is said that a wise man in times of peace prepares for war!"
One year later, early in the morning there was a tall man riding a black steed aproaching the house. He had a patch on one eye and a long scar from his forehead to his cheeck. Nereis took his weapon and went to see what the man wanted, as he aproached he heard these words: "Is this how you greet your older brother? With a weapon?" after which he gave a small smile. Nereis couldn't believe his eyes, after 8 years his oldest brother had returned! Frightened he didn't even greet him, he ran home and called his father. Algokhalmin came out in front of his oldest son and took him in his arms.
Through out the following year Nereis learned from the tales of his brother, where to go, how to make friends, who to trust, how to flirt with the ladies and also a usefull trick about teaching your steed how to behave in combat. The house was full of joy as they all waited the return of the other brothers.
In the morning of Nereis's 18th birthday, his father woke him early in the morning and placed a chain mail armour on his bed. "Take it on you, and prepare a bag with food and the things you need to survive!" He then turned with a grim face and left the room. That night Nereis was waiting in front of the house. His heart was pounding in his chest as his eyes looked up at the stars searching for an answer to that wich was about to unfold. His father came out and brought a beautyfull black steed with a shortbow strapped to the sattle. "He is Vasar my son, he will take you on your jouney!"
"What journey father?"
"The journey that every person has to take in his life, the journey in which you discover who you are! Take him, treat him well and remember these words: On the long road ahead of you seek those who know the light, and give light to those who have not seen it. Make friends and make enemies and respect them both in equal measure! Should war come about, he who does not defend his country is no son of mine! And should death ever look you in the eyes, you must SCREAM back at it with a greater thirst for life than ever before!!!..."
"Go now my son... may the light be on the path you will take..."
Nereis mounted the steed looked back once more at his house and father turned around and rode into the black forrest. Behind him, on the ground, the frozen grass felt the touch of two tears...
