Night, the best time of any day, the time when people less then friendly lurked the streets and one could always find something to entertain themselves with. Things were quiet here by the warehouses, very quiet. It was no mistake however that the darkens deepened around a corner of one particular structure, just outside the dim light that stretched as far as to cover the doorway to the warehouse. Where the light ended however, the darkness stuck, as if painted there so deep and black that not even the most keen of eyes could penetrate through for a good five feet to the end of metallic building. There, the darkness seemed to wait for something, patiently biding its time until something came along that would be gobbled up in its vastness.
Down the pathway leading between the building footsteps could be heard running towards the dark, unaware that the change in the dark was even there. The footsteps belonged to a local thief, one perhaps form the guild. She carried. Wrapped about her wrist something that, when caught the light from the structure just before the one with the darkness, glistened with shadowy wonder, something evil, something she should not have taken.
The darkness waited, still so silent, so unmoving, and so patient.
The footsteps lowed, the girl turned her head, peered behind her unaware that the danger she ran from no long loomed behind, but was now, ahead. Her feet took her past the light of the first structure and she moved as silently as she could, the chain of her prize wrapped securely about her wrist. She carried on, her mind beginning to ease, had she really gotten away with it? Did she really escape the Mage? Oh what a story this would be to tell the rest of them. She thought as she continued to move forward, now stepping into the middle of the light, just before the deep dark.
A few more steps, a few more and then she felt it, but it was too late and before she knew it, she had been sucked in by her foot, though she kicked and screamed, flopped over to her stomach, her arms reaching out in front of her, finger digging into the cobbled street beneath, the sound of her nails scraping and screaming still more as her finger tips began to bleed from her efforts, all in vain, she wouldn’t escape and soon, she was consumed in total darkness, her screams muffled but still slightly audible in the still night air.
The darkness began to take shape and then finally made its way to forming the woman behind it. A tall woman with long black locks looked down at the thief, watched the girl squirm beneath her booted foot as it pushed her pretty face into the stone, scraping and cutting that pretty face enough so that the blood beneath it was beginning to flow freely and form a pool.
“You were foolish to try girl.” The woman in black stated in a hollow and eerie tone, her black orbs consumed in shadow so that no white shown at all in her rage.
“Please..” The thief whimpered from beneath that boot, “Please don’t…”
“Kill you?” The other scoffed. “Oh not child, I find there are a lot worse things than death.” The woman replied, her voice so hollow so unfeeling and the smile she offered the other was anything but kind, no it was a chilling and most frightening expression to say the least. “Stealing is not a good idea, when you steal from those who will catch you.” The woman stated just before a piercing scream came from the face below her foot.
After a few moments, that scream subsided and the woman removed her boot from the others face. She was still alive and the moment she had been released, the girl clutched at what was once a hand on her right arm, now nothing more than an arm, ending in a bloodied stump, the hand laying at her side, the chain necklace around the woman in black’s throat where it belonged, dripping now however in the girl blood.
The woman in black knelt beside the girl, putting an arm about her shoulder and kissed her tear and blood stained face softly. “Now, run along, I think that hand may need some medical attention, I would certainly hate to go back on my word and have you bleed to death before the night was out.” She whispered coldly in the others ear as she helped her to her feet and gave the girl a swift spank on her bottom as if sending a child off to school. “Mind yourself now, and remember, stay away from the shadows.” She laughed then, an echoing sound that chased the other girl along the shadows through to the end of the docks.
Satisfied that she had taught the young thief a good lesson, the dark Shadow Mage then turned, and walked down the cobbled path between the structures an toward the streets, she would have to go and clean her pendant off now, this irritated her slightly and her eyes glistened when she growled, a feral sound, over it.
